How long does Invisalign® take? A month-by-month guide

If you are thinking about Invisalign®, one of your first questions is probably “how long will it take?” the answer depends on your teeth, but most people are surprised by how quickly they start to see a difference. Here is what to expect, month by month.

Typical treatment times

  • Invisalign® lite: usually around 3 to 7 months, for mild crowding or small gaps
  • Invisalign® moderate: usually around 6 to 12 months
  • Invisalign® full: usually around 12 to 18 months, for more complex cases or bite correction

Your exact timeline will be confirmed at your assessment, when we scan your teeth and plan your treatment digitally.

Before you start: assessment and planning

At your assessment, we take a quick, comfortable 3d scan with our itero scanner. From this, we plan every stage of your treatment and show you a simulation of your expected result. Your aligners are then made to fit your teeth precisely.

Month 1: getting used to your aligners

The first few days can feel a little strange. Your teeth may feel tender for a day or two with each new set, and you may notice a slight lisp at first. Both usually settle quickly. This is the month to build good habits: wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day and only take them out to eat, drink anything other than water, and clean your teeth.

Months 2 to 3: seeing the first changes

By now, wearing your aligners feels normal. Many patients start to notice small changes in the mirror, especially if they had gaps or mild crowding. You will come in for review appointments so we can check everything is on track.

Months 4 to 6: real progress

This is often when friends and family start to notice. For patients on shorter treatment plans, you may already be approaching your final aligners.

Months 6 to 12 and beyond

For longer treatments, this is where more complex movements happen, such as correcting your bite. Towards the end, we may add a few refinement aligners to perfect the final result.

The biggest factor: wearing your aligners

Invisalign® only works when you wear it. Leaving aligners out for long periods can slow things down or mean your teeth do not track as planned. Patients who wear their aligners consistently are the ones who finish on time.

After treatment

Once your teeth are in position, you will wear retainers to keep them there. This is an essential part of treatment, and we will explain everything you need to know.
