Even with great brushing at home, plaque and tartar build up in places your toothbrush cannot reach. A regular hygiene appointment removes this build-up, helps prevent gum disease and leaves your mouth feeling fresh and clean.
Our hygienist and hygiene therapist take the time to get to know you, track your gum health over time and give you practical, personalised advice to keep your teeth and gums healthy between visits.
Fees depend on the length of the appointment and the treatment you need. Our team will confirm the cost when you book, and members get two visits a year.
A typical hygienist appointment includes a gum health assessment, a thorough scale and polish to remove tartar and staining, and oral hygiene coaching tailored to your individual needs. We use a combination of ultrasonic and hand instruments to clean all tooth surfaces, including below the gum line. At the end of the appointment, we advise on how often you should return based on your current gum health.
For most patients, a scale and polish is comfortable and painless. If your gums are inflamed or you have significant tartar build-up below the gum line, you may experience some sensitivity during the cleaning, particularly around the gum line. We work as gently as possible and can use local anaesthetic for more intensive cleaning where needed. Any post-appointment sensitivity usually resolves within a day or two.
For most patients, every three to six months is appropriate. Those with a history of gum disease, rapid tartar accumulation or risk factors such as smoking or diabetes may benefit from more frequent visits. Those with excellent gum health and low calculus build-up may only need an annual appointment. We advise on the right interval for you based on your individual assessment.
Gum disease begins as gingivitis, inflammation of the gums caused by plaque bacteria. Symptoms include bleeding when brushing, red or swollen gums and bad breath. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, where the bone supporting the teeth is gradually destroyed. Many people have some degree of gum disease without being aware of it. A gum assessment at your hygiene or check-up appointment will tell us exactly what is happening and what, if anything, needs to be done.
Early-stage gum disease (gingivitis) is fully reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care. More advanced gum disease (periodontitis) causes permanent bone loss that cannot be restored, but it can be arrested and managed effectively with regular professional treatment and thorough daily cleaning. The goal of treatment is to stabilise the condition and prevent further deterioration rather than reverse the damage already done.
Bleeding gums are almost always a sign of inflammation caused by plaque bacteria, a sign of gingivitis. The natural instinct is to brush more gently around areas that bleed, but this actually makes the situation worse. The correct response is to brush and floss more thoroughly in these areas, remove the plaque, and allow the inflammation to resolve. If your gums are bleeding consistently, please book a hygiene appointment; we can assess the cause and give you specific advice.
A 30-minute hygienist appointment covers a full gum assessment, scale and polish, and oral hygiene coaching. If you require more intensive treatment, such as root surface debridement under local anaesthetic, this will be discussed and costed separately before any additional treatment begins.
In most cases, yes, we recommend that all patients have a current check-up before a hygiene appointment so that any active decay or other clinical issues are identified. However, if you are an existing patient with a recent check-up, you may be able to book a hygiene appointment directly. Please contact the practice, and we will advise based on your circumstances.
Contact the practice by phone or online to book your hygienist appointment. We recommend a 30-minute slot for a thorough appointment. If it has been more than twelve months since your last professional clean, or if you are aware of significant build-up or bleeding gums, please let us know when you book so we can ensure the appointment time is appropriate for your needs.
