Gum disease is one of the most common dental problems and is often painless in its early stages. Bleeding gums, bad breath and receding gums can all be early signs, and if left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss.
The good news is that gum disease is preventable and treatable. Our dentists and hygienists will assess your gums, remove the build-up causing inflammation and help you keep your gums healthy for the long term.
Costs depend on the severity of your gum disease and how many appointments you need. We will give you a clear estimate before we begin.
Gum disease is caused by a build-up of plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth. When plaque is not removed through regular brushing and flossing, it irritates the gum tissue, causing inflammation. Over time, if not treated, this can progress to affect the bone supporting the teeth.
Yes. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and there is growing evidence of a link between gum disease and systemic conditions, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The good news is that it is treatable, especially when caught early.
Common signs include bleeding gums, bad breath, swollen or receding gums and loose teeth. However, gum disease can also be present without obvious symptoms, which is why regular check-ups are so important. If you are concerned, book a check-up so we can assess your gum health properly.
In its early stage (gingivitis), gum disease is reversible with improved oral hygiene and professional treatment. More advanced gum disease (periodontitis) cannot be fully reversed, but it can be stabilised and managed effectively, preserving the teeth for many years.
Root surface debridement is carried out under local anaesthetic where needed, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. It is common to experience some sensitivity and tenderness in the gums for a day or two afterwards, which settles with over-the-counter pain relief.
This depends on the severity of the gum disease. Mild cases may be resolved in one or two hygiene appointments combined with improved home care. More advanced cases may require a structured programme of several appointments, followed by ongoing maintenance visits.
Consistent oral hygiene is the most important factor. Brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, and clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes. Our hygienist will show you how to clean effectively and which tools are most appropriate for your mouth.
In most cases, yes, we recommend that all patients have a current check-up before a hygiene appointment so that any active decay or other clinical issues are identified. However, if you are an existing patient with a recent check-up, you may be able to book a hygiene appointment directly. Please contact the practice, and we will advise based on your circumstances.
Contact the practice by phone or online to book your hygienist appointment. We recommend a 30-minute slot for a thorough appointment. If it has been more than twelve months since your last professional clean, or if you are aware of significant build-up or bleeding gums, please let us know when you book so we can ensure the appointment time is appropriate for your needs.
