Veneers are thin shells fitted to the front of your teeth to improve their colour, shape, size and alignment. They can transform a smile affected by chips, staining, gaps or worn edges, with results that look completely natural.
We offer chairside composite, laboratory composite and porcelain veneers. We always take a conservative approach, keeping as much of your natural tooth as possible, and help you choose the option that suits your goals.
Veneer costs vary with the material chosen and the number of teeth treated. We will provide a full written quote at your consultation.
Composite veneers are made from a tooth-coloured resin material, either placed directly on the tooth by your dentist in a single appointment, or fabricated in a laboratory for a more refined result. Porcelain veneers are thin shells of dental ceramic made by a specialist technician. Porcelain offers superior aesthetics, greater resistance to staining, and a longer lifespan, but requires some preparation of the tooth and is considered irreversible. Composite is more affordable, reversible and repairable, but less durable. The right choice depends on your teeth, your goals and your circumstances. We will help you make the decision that is right for you.
Composite veneers, when placed without preparation (which is possible in many cases), are completely reversible and involve no alteration to the tooth. Porcelain veneers require a thin layer of enamel to be removed from the front surface of the tooth; this is typically 0.3 to 0.5mm, which is why they are considered an irreversible treatment. We keep preparation to an absolute minimum and will always assess whether preparation is actually necessary for your case. Laboratory composite veneers typically require minimal preparation.
Well-maintained porcelain veneers typically last ten to fifteen years or more. Composite veneers have a shorter lifespan, usually five to eight years for chairside composite, somewhat longer for lab composite, and may require polishing, minor repairs or replacement over time. The lifespan of any veneer depends on how well it is looked after: regular hygiene appointments, wearing a night guard if you grind, and avoiding habits like nail-biting or chewing hard objects all help extend the life of veneers.
Veneers work best on teeth that are structurally healthy, with sufficient enamel for the veneer to bond to. If you have significant decay, gum disease or a heavily restored tooth, this will need to be addressed before veneers can be considered. We will carry out a thorough assessment at your consultation to determine whether veneers are appropriate and, if so, which type. We will also be honest with you if we think whitening or orthodontic treatment would give you a better result for your situation.
Veneers can improve the appearance of mildly misaligned or irregular teeth, but they are not a substitute for orthodontic treatment for significant misalignment. Using veneers to mask severely crooked teeth requires excessive alteration of the tooth structure and often produces results that look unnatural. Where alignment is the primary concern, we are more likely to recommend orthodontic treatment, either braces or clear aligners, sometimes followed by veneers if cosmetic refinement is still needed afterwards.
Porcelain veneers are highly resistant to staining; the surface is smooth and non-porous, so tea, coffee and red wine have much less effect than on natural enamel. Composite veneers are more susceptible to surface staining over time, particularly chairside composite, which benefits from regular polishing at hygiene appointments. Regardless of which type you have, maintaining good oral hygiene and attending regular hygiene appointments will help keep your veneers looking their best.
