Composite bonding uses a tooth-coloured resin to repair chips, close small gaps and improve the shape of your teeth. The material is sculpted by hand and polished to blend seamlessly with your natural smile.
Unlike veneers or crowns, bonding needs little or no removal of natural tooth, and in most cases no anaesthetic. It is often completed in a single appointment, making it one of the quickest ways to improve your smile.
Bonding costs depend on how many teeth are treated and the result you want. You will get a clear, personalised quote before we begin.
Composite bonding is a cosmetic dental treatment in which a tooth-coloured resin material is applied to the surface of the teeth, sculpted to the desired shape, hardened with a curing light, and polished. It can correct chips, gaps, discolouration, and uneven tooth shape. In most cases, it requires no removal of tooth structure and no injections, and can be completed in a single appointment.
With good care, composite bonding typically lasts between five and seven years before a refresh or repair may be needed. The longevity depends on the quality of the original placement, your diet and habits, and how well you maintain the bonding. Avoiding biting nails, chewing pens or eating very hard foods will help extend the life of the composite. Staining from coffee, red wine and tobacco will accumulate over time, as it does on natural teeth.
For most patients, composite bonding requires no anaesthetic and is completely painless. Where the treatment area is very close to the gum or involves a sensitive surface, a local anaesthetic may be used, but this is the exception rather than the rule. There is no drilling in most cases, and the process is generally much less daunting than patients expect.
Yes, in most cases. Composite bonding material does not change colour with whitening gel, so if you whiten after bonding, the natural teeth will brighten but the composite will not, creating a mismatch. Whitening first allows us to match the composite shade to your new, brighter tooth colour for a consistent, lasting result. We recommend this approach for most patients considering both treatments.
Brush and floss as normal, taking care around the bonded surfaces. Avoid very hard foods that could chip the composite, and minimise contact with heavily staining food and drink. We offer a bonding maintenance service, a polish and minor touch-up if needed, which helps extend the life of the composite and keeps the surface looking fresh. We recommend a maintenance appointment every twelve to eighteen months.
Yes. Because composite bonding requires minimal or no preparation of the underlying tooth in most cases, it can be removed without permanently altering your teeth. This is one of the key advantages over porcelain veneers, which require irreversible tooth reduction. If you decide bonding is not for you, or want to progress to veneers in the future, the composite can simply be removed.
