Root canal treatment removes infection from inside a tooth, relieves pain and allows you to keep your natural tooth. It is often the difference between saving a tooth and losing it.
Treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic and, for most patients, feels much like having a filling. We clean and seal the inside of the tooth, then usually protect it with a crown so it can last for many years.
Costs depend on the tooth being treated and the complexity of the case. We will give you a full breakdown before any treatment begins.
Root canal treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. The reputation for being painful stems from the toothache that precedes it; the root canal itself relieves that pain. Mild tenderness for a day or two after treatment is normal and easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how straightforward the experience is.
Most root canals can be completed in one or two appointments. Straightforward cases in front teeth are often done in a single visit. More complex cases, particularly in back teeth with multiple canals or where infection is significant, may require a second appointment to ensure the canals are fully cleared before the final seal is placed.
If an infected tooth is left untreated, the infection will worsen. In the short term, this means increasing pain and swelling. Over time, the infection can spread to the surrounding bone and, in serious cases, to other areas of the body. Extraction becomes the only remaining option, and the longer the infected tooth is left, the more the surrounding bone deteriorates, complicating future replacement options.
A well-treated and properly restored tooth can last as long as your other natural teeth. The key is to have the tooth crowned after root canal treatment; a crowned tooth is significantly less likely to fracture than an uncrowned one. With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, many patients keep their treated teeth for decades.
In most cases, yes. Root canal treatment removes the pulp from inside the tooth, which makes the remaining structure more brittle and prone to fracture, particularly in back teeth that take high biting forces. A crown protects the tooth and restores its full function and appearance. For front teeth, in some cases, an alternative restoration may be appropriate, and we will advise accordingly.
Yes. The tooth is restored with a crown or filling following treatment and will look and function normally. In some cases, teeth that have been infected for some time may darken slightly from the inside; this can be addressed with internal whitening if needed. Your clinician will advise on the best approach for your specific tooth.
