NHS braces for children: who qualifies and what are the alternatives?

If your child’s teeth are crooked or their bite does not look quite right, you may be wondering whether they can have braces on the NHS. The answer depends on how much treatment their teeth need. Here is a simple guide for parents.

Is NHS orthodontic treatment free?

Yes. NHS orthodontic treatment is free for young people under 18 who meet the eligibility criteria. It is usually provided by a specialist orthodontist, following a referral from your dentist.

Who qualifies?

NHS orthodontic treatment is for children with a clear clinical need, rather than for mainly cosmetic reasons. Orthodontists use a national scoring system called the index of orthodontic treatment need (iotn) to decide who qualifies.

The index looks at things like:

  • Severe crowding or large gaps
  • Teeth that stick out a long way
  • A significant overbite, underbite or crossbite
  • Missing or impacted teeth
  • Problems that affect how your child bites or chews

Children with more severe problems usually qualify. Those with milder crowding or small gaps may not, even if the teeth bother them.

When should my child be assessed?

Most children are assessed once most of their adult teeth have come through, often around the age of 11 to 13. We keep an eye on how your child’s teeth and bite are developing at every check-up, and will talk to you about a referral when the time is right.

What are the waiting times?

Demand for NHS orthodontics is high, and waiting lists in some areas can be long. It is a good idea to be referred at the right time rather than waiting.

What if my child does not qualify?

If your child does not qualify for NHS treatment, or you would prefer an alternative, private options are available. At castle street, we offer Invisalign® for teenagers, a clear, removable alternative to fixed braces. Private Invisalign® starts from £2,900, with 0% finance available over 12 months.

Looking after teeth during treatment

Whichever treatment your child has, good brushing, fewer sugary snacks and regular check-ups are essential. Braces and aligners can trap food, so keeping teeth clean is more important than ever.
