Can Invisalign® fix my overbite? Everything you need to know

An overbite is one of the most common reasons people come to us about straightening their teeth. The good news is that many overbites can be treated with Invisalign®, without the need for fixed braces. Here is what you need to know.

What is an overbite?

An overbite is when your upper front teeth overlap your lower front teeth by more than they should when you bite together. A small overlap is completely normal. When it is larger, it is often called a deep bite.

Overbites can be caused by the position of your teeth, the size or position of your jaws, or habits such as thumb sucking in childhood. Some people are simply born with them.

Why treat an overbite?

For some people, an overbite is purely a cosmetic concern. For others, it can cause real problems, such as:

  • Wear on the front teeth
  • Lower teeth biting into the gum behind the upper teeth
  • Jaw discomfort or tension
  • Difficulty cleaning crowded teeth

Can Invisalign® treat an overbite?

In many cases, yes. Invisalign® can move teeth up, down, forwards and backwards, and can be combined with small attachments (tooth-coloured bumps bonded to certain teeth) and elastics to help correct your bite. Mild to moderate overbites often respond very well.

For more severe overbites, particularly where the jaws themselves are out of position, other treatments may be needed. That is why a proper assessment is so important.

How we assess your bite

At your assessment, we will examine your teeth and bite, talk about any symptoms you have noticed and take a digital scan with our itero scanner. The scan allows us to plan your treatment and show you a simulation of how your teeth could move.

Our principal dentist, dr kishan lakhani, is recognised among the top 150 Invisalign® providers in the world, and has treated a wide range of bite problems.

What if Invisalign® is not the right option?

If we think another approach would give you a better result, we will tell you. That might mean fixed braces, or a referral to a specialist orthodontist. For under 18s, NHS orthodontic treatment may be available where there is a clear clinical need.

How much does it cost?

Invisalign® at castle street starts from £2,900, depending on the complexity of your case, with 0% finance available over 12 months.
