NHS dental care for children: What is free and what isn’t?

Most parents know that NHS dental care is free for children, but there is often confusion about exactly what is covered. Here is a clear, simple guide to NHS dentistry for children, and when private options might come into play.

Who gets free NHS dental care?

NHS dental treatment is free for:

  • All children under 18;
  • Young people under 19 who are in full-time education.

There is no charge for check-ups or any clinically necessary treatment. You do not need to show proof of age for younger children, but older teenagers may be asked to confirm their date of birth or that they are in full-time education.

What is covered?

NHS dental care covers all treatment that is clinically needed to keep your child’s mouth healthy, including:

  • Check-ups and examinations
  • X-rays when needed
  • Fluoride varnish, recommended at least twice a year from age three
  • Fissure sealants to protect back teeth
  • A scale and polish when clinically needed
  • Fillings
  • Extractions
  • Emergency treatment
  • Orthodontic treatment (braces) for children who meet the clinical criteria, usually through a referral

You can read more on our NHS page.

What is not covered?

Treatments that are mainly cosmetic are not available on the NHS, even for children. These include:

  • Teeth whitening
  • Braces or aligners for purely cosmetic reasons, or where a child does not meet the NHS criteria
  • Sports mouth guards
  • Cosmetic bonding

What about braces?

NHS braces are available for under 18s with a clear clinical need, assessed using a national scoring system. Children with milder problems may not qualify. In those cases, private options such as Invisalign® for teens are available.

Private children’s appointments

We also offer private appointments for children at Castle Street. Some families prefer this for more flexible appointment times, longer appointments, or to be seen alongside their own private appointments.

Free care for mums too

If you are pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months, your NHS dental treatment is free too, with a valid maternity exemption certificate.
