Teen vs adult Invisalign®: what is the difference?

Invisalign® is not just for adults. More and more teenagers are choosing clear aligners instead of traditional braces. If you are a parent weighing up the options for your child, or an adult wondering whether you have left it too late, here is how teen and adult treatment compare.

Why a different approach for teenagers?

Teenagers’ mouths are still growing and changing. Adult teeth may still be coming through, and the jaws are still developing. Invisalign® treatment for teens is designed with this in mind, allowing space for teeth that have not fully erupted.

The key differences

Growth: teen treatment can take advantage of natural growth, which can sometimes make certain movements easier. Adult treatment works with teeth and jaws that have finished growing.

Compliance indicators: teen aligners can include small blue indicators that fade with wear, so parents and dentists can check the aligners are being worn enough.

Replacement aligners: teen packages often include a number of replacement aligners, because let’s be honest, aligners occasionally go missing in school bags and lunchboxes.

Goals: adults often come to us wanting to fix something that has bothered them for years, or teeth that have moved since they had braces as a child. It is never too late to straighten your teeth.

Is Invisalign® suitable for my teenager?

Many teens are great candidates for Invisalign®. It suits them especially well if they are:

  • Self-conscious about the look of metal braces
  • Into sport or music, where brackets can be uncomfortable
  • Responsible enough to wear aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day

The conversation about wearing them

The biggest factor in success is wearing the aligners. It is worth having an honest chat with your teenager before starting. If they are not keen, or likely to leave them out, fixed braces might be the better choice.

What about NHS braces?

For under 18s with a clear clinical need, NHS orthodontic treatment with fixed braces may be available free of charge through a referral. NHS treatment does not usually include Invisalign®. We are happy to talk you through both options.
