A knock to the mouth during sport can chip, crack or knock out a tooth in a split second. A custom-made mouth guard is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your teeth, lips, gums and jaw.
Unlike shop-bought guards, ours are made from an accurate scan or impression of your teeth. They fit snugly, stay in place during play and are comfortable enough to wear all season, for adults and children alike.
Mouth guard prices depend on the design and level of protection you need. Our team will confirm the cost when you book your fitting.
A boil-and-bite guard is softened in hot water and bitten into to create a rough mould of the teeth. The fit is never precise, and the result is usually bulky and loose. A custom guard is made from an accurate scan or impression taken by a dentist, so it fits your teeth and gums exactly, is far more comfortable and offers better protection.
With good care, an adult guard usually lasts one to two seasons of regular use. For children and teenagers, the fit should be checked at least once a year, and a new guard should be made whenever the old one no longer fits properly.
Not necessarily every year, but regularly. As children lose baby teeth, adult teeth come through, or they go through orthodontic treatment, a guard that fit well last year may not fit well now. Bring the guard along to your child’s check-up, and we will let you know if it still fits properly.
Yes, although the right approach depends on your type of orthodontic treatment. Guards are available that fit over fixed braces and protect both the teeth and the lips and cheeks. If you are having Invisalign treatment, your dentist will advise on the best option at your appointment.
In most cases, yes. Rules set a minimum safety standard, not the best one. Many sports without compulsory mouth guards still carry a real risk of dental injury, and a custom guard is a simple, affordable way to protect your teeth.
Yes. We offer a wide range of single-colour and multi-colour designs. Let us know your preference when you book. For team or club bookings, please contact the practice directly.
Rinse your guard in cold water straight after use, brush it gently with a soft toothbrush and mild soap, then let it air-dry before storing it in a ventilated, rigid case. Keep it out of direct sunlight and hot cars, as heat can change its shape. Bring it to your check-ups so we can check it for wear.
Sports mouth guards are not generally available on the NHS, as they are not considered a clinically necessary treatment. They are available privately at Castle Street, and our team will be happy to explain the options and costs.
