Lots of people are entitled to free NHS dental treatment without realising it, and others claim it by mistake and end up with a penalty charge. Here is a simple guide to who qualifies in England, and what you need to do.
If you do not qualify automatically but are on a low income, you may be able to get help through the NHS low income scheme:
You can check what you are entitled to using the NHS eligibility checker on the NHS Business Services Authority website, and apply online.
Ask your midwife, GP or health visitor for a maternity exemption certificate. Pregnancy can affect your gums, so it is a great time to have a check-up.
When you come for treatment, you will be asked to fill in a form stating why you do not need to pay, and to show proof, such as your exemption certificate or benefit letter.
It is your responsibility to make sure your claim is correct. The NHS checks claims, and if you claim free treatment when you are not entitled, you may have to pay the full charge plus a penalty of up to £100. If you are unsure, please check before your appointment.
From April 2026, NHS charges are £27.90 for band 1, £76.60 for band 2 and £332.10 for band 3.
