NHS and private dentistry under one roof: how it works at castle street

One of the questions we are asked most often is how NHS and private dentistry work together. Can you be an NHS patient and still have private treatment? Do NHS patients see different dentists? Will you be pushed towards private care? Here is a clear, simple explanation of how things work at Castle Street Dental Practice.

The same team and the same standards

At castle street, our NHS and private patients are looked after by the same friendly, experienced team, in the same surgeries and to the same clinical standards. Whether you are coming in for a routine NHS check-up or a private cosmetic treatment, you will receive the same warm welcome and the same honest advice.

What the NHS covers

The NHS provides all the treatment that is clinically necessary to keep your mouth, teeth and gums healthy. That includes check-ups, x-rays, fillings, root canal treatment, extractions, crowns, bridges and dentures. Charges are set by the government and grouped into three bands:

  • Band 1 (£27.90): examination, diagnosis, advice and a scale and polish if clinically needed
  • Band 2 (£76.60): everything in band 1 plus fillings, root canals and extractions
  • Band 3 (£332.10): everything in bands 1 and 2 plus crowns, bridges and dentures

You can find full details on our NHS page.

What private care adds

Private dentistry gives you more choice. That might mean more flexible appointment times, longer appointments, a wider range of materials, or treatments that are not available on the NHS because they are mainly cosmetic, such as teeth whitening, composite bonding, Invisalign® and dental implants.

Mixing NHS and private treatment

You do not have to choose one or the other. You can have some treatment on the NHS and some privately. For example, you might have your check-up and fillings on the NHS, but choose a private tooth-coloured filling on a back tooth, or whiten your teeth privately.

Your dentist will always explain what is available on the NHS and what the private alternatives are, including costs, so you can make the choice that is right for you. Any private items will be clearly shown on your written treatment plan.

No pressure, ever

We believe everyone deserves good dentistry, whatever their budget. You will never be pressured into private treatment at castle street. If the NHS option is the right one for you, that is absolutely fine with us.

A third option: our membership plan

For patients who would like private care but prefer to spread the cost, our practice membership plan covers two check-ups and two hygiene appointments a year for £19.95 a month, plus 10% off general and cosmetic treatments and 50% off teeth whitening.
