Most of us grew up hearing that we should see the dentist every six months. But is that still the rule? The answer is that it depends on you. Here is what the guidance says, and how we decide the right interval for each patient.
In the UK, dentists follow NICE guidance on check-up intervals. Rather than a one-size-fits-all six months, the recommended gap between check-ups is based on your individual oral health and risk:
Children usually need more frequent visits because their teeth are developing and can decay more quickly.
A check-up is much more than a quick look. We examine your teeth, gums, tongue and the soft tissues of your mouth, including an oral cancer screening. We check existing fillings and crowns, take X-rays if they are due and talk to you about anything you have noticed.
Most dental problems do not hurt at first. Early decay and gum disease are often silent. Regular check-ups mean we can spot problems when they are small, which means simpler, quicker and cheaper treatment, and far less chance of toothache.
Many patients also benefit from regular hygiene appointments, especially if they are prone to gum problems. Your dentist will recommend how often you should see the hygienist.
An NHS check-up is a band 1 treatment, costing £27.90 from April 2026, and is free for children and many adults. A private adult examination at Castle Street costs £40. Our practice membership plan includes two check-ups and two hygiene appointments a year for £19.95 a month.
If it has been a while, please do not worry. We see patients all the time who have not been for years, and we will never judge. Call us on 01494 527 971 to book.
