NHS dental charges can seem confusing at first, but once you understand how the bands work, they are actually quite simple. Here is a plain-English guide to what you will pay for NHS dental treatment in England from April 2026.
NHS dental charges are set by the government and are the same at every NHS practice in England. Instead of paying for each individual treatment, you pay one charge for each course of treatment, based on the most complex treatment you need. There are three main bands, plus a charge for urgent care.
Covers your examination, diagnosis and advice, plus X-rays, a scale and polish if clinically needed, and preventive care such as fluoride varnish.
Covers everything in Band 1, plus treatment such as fillings, root canal treatment, extractions and treatment for gum disease. If you need three fillings and an extraction in one course of treatment, you still pay just £76.60.
Covers everything in bands 1 and 2, plus more complex treatment involving a dental laboratory, such as crowns, bridges and dentures.
Covers urgent care to relieve pain or stabilise a problem, such as an assessment, X-rays, a temporary filling or taking out a tooth. Any further routine treatment is charged separately at the relevant band.
Many people are entitled to free NHS dental treatment, including children under 18, pregnant women and new mothers, and people receiving certain benefits. You can find the full list on our NHS page.
