“Do i need a scale and polish?” is a question we hear a lot, especially from NHS patients who are not sure what is included in their check-up. Here is a simple explanation of what a scale and polish is, when you need one, and how it differs from a full hygiene appointment.
Even with great brushing, some plaque is missed. Over time, it hardens into tartar (also called calculus), which cannot be removed with a toothbrush. A scale and polish uses special instruments to remove tartar from your teeth, particularly along and just below the gum line, then polishes the teeth to remove surface stains and leave them feeling smooth.
Tartar is rough, so it gives bacteria a perfect place to build up. That leads to inflamed, bleeding gums and, over time, gum disease. Removing it helps keep your gums healthy and your breath fresh.
Not everyone does. Some people build up very little tartar and have healthy gums. Others build up tartar quickly, or have gum problems that need regular professional cleaning. Your dentist will check your teeth and gums at each check-up and let you know whether you need one, and how often.
On the NHS, a scale and polish is included in your band 1 charge (£27.90 from April 2026) if your dentist decides it is clinically necessary. If it is purely cosmetic, for example, to remove staining when your gums are healthy, it may not be provided on the NHS.
A hygiene appointment with one of our hygienists is more thorough. As well as removing tartar and stains, your hygienist will:
A 30-minute private hygienist appointment at Castle Street costs £85. Our hygiene team includes Barbara, who has over 37 years of experience, and Amelia, our dental hygiene therapist.
Gum disease is usually painless until it is advanced. Regular professional cleaning helps prevent problems that are much more expensive, and uncomfortable, to fix later.
Our practice membership plan includes two check-ups and two hygiene appointments a year for £19.95 a month. Call us on 01494 527 971 to book.
