Gum disease is one of the most common health conditions in the uk, and many people have it without realising. The good news is that it is largely preventable, and when caught early, very treatable. Here is what you need to know.
Gum disease is inflammation and infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It is caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that builds up on teeth every day. There are two main stages.
Gingivitis: the early stage. Gums become red, swollen and bleed easily when you brush. At this stage, no permanent damage has been done, and it can be fully reversed with good cleaning and a professional clean.
Periodontitis: if gingivitis is not treated, the inflammation can spread deeper, damaging the gum and bone that support your teeth. Pockets form between the gums and teeth, and over time teeth can become loose. Bone loss cannot be fully reversed, but periodontitis can be managed and stabilised.
Gum disease is often painless, which is why regular check-ups are so important.
Treatment depends on how advanced it is. For gingivitis, a professional clean with our hygienist and better cleaning at home is often all that is needed. For periodontitis, you may need deeper cleaning below the gum line, called root surface debridement, usually carried out under local anaesthetic, followed by regular maintenance visits.
Research has linked gum disease with other health conditions, including diabetes and heart disease. Looking after your gums is good for your overall health, not just your smile.
Gum disease treatment is available on the NHS where clinically needed, usually as part of a band 1 or band 2 course of treatment. Privately, a hygienist appointment costs £85.
