Bridge, denture or implant? Your options for replacing a missing tooth

Losing a tooth is more common than you might think, whether through decay, gum disease or an accident. Leaving a gap can cause neighbouring teeth to drift, affect your bite and make eating harder. The good news is there are three reliable ways to fill the gap. Here is how they compare.

Option 1: a dental bridge

A bridge is a false tooth held in place by the teeth either side of the gap. It is fixed in your mouth, so it does not come out.

Pros:
fixed, natural-looking and usually completed in two or three appointments. Bridges are available on the NHS as a band 3 treatment.

Cons:
a traditional bridge usually involves shaping the neighbouring teeth to support it. Resin-bonded bridges need much less preparation but are not suitable for every situation.

Cost at castle street: from £550 per unit privately, or £332.10 on the NHS (band 3).

Option 2: a denture

A partial denture is a removable plate with one or more false teeth that clips onto your remaining teeth.

Pros: the most affordable option, no need to prepare neighbouring teeth, and easy to add teeth to in the future. Available on the NHS.

Cons:
removable, which some people dislike, and it may feel less secure when eating.

Cost at castle street: plastic dentures from £620 and cobalt chrome partial dentures from £1,200 privately, or £332.10 on the NHS (band 3).

Option 3: a dental implant

An implant replaces the root of the missing tooth with a titanium post, topped with a crown.

Pros:
the closest thing to a natural tooth, fixed in place, does not affect neighbouring teeth and helps preserve the jawbone.

Cons:
the highest upfront cost, takes several months to complete, and needs enough healthy bone. Implants are not usually available on the NHS.

Cost at castle street: from around £2,500 for an implant and crown.

Which is right for you?

It depends on the health of your surrounding teeth, your bone, your budget and your preferences. If the teeth next to the gap already have large fillings or crowns, a bridge can make good use of them. If they are healthy and untouched, an implant avoids drilling them. If budget is the main concern, a denture is a sensible, practical option.
