The dental implant journey: from consultation to final crown

If you are considering a dental implant, it helps to know what the process involves. Implant treatment happens in stages over a few months, but most patients find it much more straightforward than they expected. Here is a step-by-step guide to what happens at castle street.

Stage 1: your consultation

Everything starts with a relaxed conversation. We talk about which teeth you would like to replace, what you would like to achieve and any worries you have. We then examine your mouth, check your gums and bite, and take x-rays or scans to look at the bone where the implant would go.

Afterwards, you will receive a clear, written treatment plan with all your options and costs. There is no pressure to decide on the day.

Stage 2: preparation, if needed

Some patients need a little groundwork first. This might include treating gum disease, removing a failing tooth, or building up the bone with a bone graft or sinus lift. If you need any of these, we will explain why and how long they add to your treatment.

Stage 3: placing the implant

The implant is placed in a short procedure under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel any pain. Most patients are surprised by how quick and comfortable it is. Afterwards, you may have some mild swelling or tenderness for a few days, which is usually easily managed with over-the-counter pain relief.

If the implant is in a visible area, we can usually provide a temporary tooth so you are never left with a gap.

Stage 4: healing

Over the next three to six months, the implant fuses with your jawbone. This process, called osseointegration, is what makes implants so strong and stable. You will come in for a review during this time so we can check everything is healing well.

Stage 5: your new tooth

Once the implant has fully healed, we take a digital scan and have your permanent crown made to match your natural teeth. It is then fitted securely onto the implant. The result looks, feels and works like a natural tooth.

How long does it all take?

For a straightforward single implant, the whole process usually takes around four to six months from placement to final crown. If bone grafting is needed first, it can take longer.

Aftercare

Look after your implant just like a natural tooth: brush twice a day, clean between your teeth and keep up with regular check-ups and hygiene appointments.
